How to Use Zoom: Stay Connected and Safe

You’ve probably heard a lot of buzz over the past year about Zoom – a tool used by businesses and individuals to connect virtually using a computer or other mobile device. It’s not a new app, but its use has increased exponentially as we’ve all shifted to connecting remotely – for business and for pleasure aka, staying sane during a pandemic. Learn how to use Zoom and stay connected while safe at home!

Learn How to Use Zoom: It’s Very Simple!

There are other video conferencing apps out there, but the reasons Zoom has become the go-to app for connecting remotely are:

  1. It was built for large scale organizations – private companies, universities, government institutions, etc. – so they’ve had lots of practice.

  2. It’s universally accessible, works with every kind of device, including a good old-fashioned phone – yes, you can even dial in using a landline.

  3. It’s free.

How do you access Zoom?

You don’t have to have an account to access Zoom. You just need to be invited to a virtual meeting or reunion or social gathering. When someone sends you an invitation to a video conference call using Zoom, you’ll receive a link. All you have to do is click on that link from your computer, tablet or smartphone, and you’ll be prompted to download the app and connected to the group. And if you don’t have any of the above, you can also dial in. Of course, you won’t see or be seen by anyone, but you’ll have a place at the proverbial table, so it’s the second-best thing to connecting with a group.

How do you make a Zoom account?

If you want to open a free account on Zoom, you can go to their website: https://zoom.us and download the app in four easy steps:

  1. Click on “Download App”

  2. Click on “Zoom Client for Meetings”

  3. Click “Download” again and the app will be installed

  4. Click on the “exe.file” to finish the process.

Note, you’ll need a strong internet connection or cellular signal to ensure a steady video stream.

What are the benefits of using Zoom?

  • Being able to see who you’re talking to promotes better communication – Having the chance to read facial expressions and body posture is especially helpful when you’re communicating with more than one person remotely.

  • You can share ideas and information by sharing your screen – It’s easy to let others see your screen if you want to review a document, look at photos or view a website together.

  • It’s a way to socialize when you can’t really socialize – Having a virtual visit with friends or family can be a great way to get energized. Whether you do a virtual coffee date or cocktail hour, it’s at least half as good as the real thing, and it’s less expensive and safer than going out. And Zoom allows you to record the event, so you can replay the whole scene later.
