Helpful Tips for Aging in Place

The United States Census Bureau reports that by the year 2030, an estimated 1 in 5 Americans will be 65 or older. According to an AARP survey, 77% of older adults wish to stay in their community for as long as possible. As seniors age, the demand for what is commonly referred to as aging in place increases.

Aging in place isn’t just about growing older in your own home. It’s about aging in a place you desire for your golden years, regardless if it’s in a home you’ve spent decades in or moving to a new home or even a retirement community. Future planning is sometimes difficult, but having a guide will help determine what is right for you.

Solutions to Help You Age in Place

Home Modifications

Making certain home modifications before they are needed is one thing that can help you age in place comfortably. This way, you are not scrambling at the last minute if an unexpected change occurs.

What can you do to help with home comfort as you grow older? Consider your current health status. Do you have a chronic health condition like heart disease, COPD, or diabetes? Do you presently have stairs in your home, and could that become an issue down the road? If moving to a new home isn’t ideal, do you have space or a room at ground level that could be turned into a bedroom if needed?

Home modifications for aging in place don’t have to be a whole house remodel. Simply adding some grab-bars to your bathroom is a solution to meet your future needs.

Financial Concerns

Aging in place affordability is a concern that seniors face as they grow older. Between possible home modifications and a limited income, it’s no surprise that people question affordability. The good news is that people and organizations want to help.

In-Home Care Services

Many older adults who want to remain in their own homes may need a little extra support. That’s where in-home care services benefit aging in place. UJCES is a home care agency that pairs you with a home health aide who can help with household chores and activities of daily living (ADLs). We take the time to match you with someone you will enjoy spending time with because your aide can also serve as a companion to social outings or even doctor appointments.
