Tips for Caring for Aging Parents Remotely
Having a parent or loved one who is a senior and may have physical or mental limitations can be stressful even when you’re not living and caregiving in the same home. But when you live outside the city or across the country from your loved one, caring for aging parents it’s especially taxing. You may feel powerless and somewhat useless when you’re so far apart.
But there's good news! You may be surprised at all you can do remotely. Much of what adult children are asked to do can be done via phone or computer, so it’s helpful to ask.
“We rely on children to be partners with us, whether they’re in the city or not. Often, the most helpful thing they can do is to contact their parent’s doctor or other healthcare provider to request information that we need to deliver services,” says Bella Zaltsman, a Case Manager at UJC. “Sometimes family members are living across town or across the country, and they are busy with their day job and families of their own. But when I explain what I need to get their parent services like Meals on Wheels or in-home care, they’re happy to help.”
Caring for someone long distance can be difficult, but even a phone call can help. “I tell everyone. Call your mother or father and just ask them how they’re doing. And really listen. That’s what is important to do when you have an older relative. Show you care by calling them and checking in. It will mean more than you know,” says Bella.
Caring for Aging Parents: Here’s How You Can Help a Loved One Remotely
Call your parent or grandparent and ask how they’re doing
Then, give them your undivided attention. Step away from your kids, close your computer or tablet, and just listen. They’ll feel the difference and so will you.
Check with your loved one’s case manager or local caregiver to see what services they are getting and ask how it’s working
Ask if there’s anything else they may be eligible for and find out how you can help them enroll. Services like Meals on Wheels, in-home care, or virtual activities in real-time with other seniors can have a positive impact on their wellness.
